Historical Milestones & Chronology

The sacred journey of the House of the Virgin Mary from antiquity to the modern era

AD 37 – 48

Arrival of the Virgin Mary and Apostle Saint John in Ephesus

According to the Gospel (John 19:26-27), Jesus on the Cross entrusted His Mother Mary to His beloved disciple Saint John. Amid growing persecution of Christians in Jerusalem, Saint John brought Mary to Ephesus for her safety, settling her in this tranquil stone retreat secluded high in the forested slopes of Mount Koressos.
AD 431

Third Ecumenical Council of Ephesus & Church of Mary

Over 200 bishops convened at the Church of Mary in Ephesus officially proclaimed Mary as Theotokos (Mother of God / God-Bearer), canonizing Ephesus's ancient spiritual bond with the Virgin Mary into Church Law. Council synodal letters explicitly stated that John and Mary lived together on Ephesian soil.
1818 – 1824

The Visions of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich

Bedridden in Dülmen, Germany, and having never traveled to Asia Minor, the Augustinian mystic Sister Anne Catherine Emmerich described in vivid visions the topography of Mary's house, the shape of the mountain behind Ephesus, the rustic stone architecture, the hearth chimney, and the crystal stream flowing immediately behind it. Renowned German poet Clemens Brentano transcribed these revelations into famous published books.

The Lazarist Expedition & Historic Discovery (Panaya Kapulu)

Father Eugène Poulin, Superior of the French Lazarist College of Smyrna, and Father Henri Jung ascended Mount Koressos with Brentano's book in hand, locating the stone ruins, apse, and spring exactly as Emmerich had described. They learned that Orthodox Christian villagers from nearby Kirkindje (Şirince) had climbed to this very spot every August 15 for centuries to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption under the name Panaya Kapulu (Gate of the All-Holy).
1892 – 1915

Sister Marie de Mandat-Grancey & Preservation Efforts

Sister Marie de Mandat-Grancey, aristocrat and Superior of the French Hospital in Smyrna, used her personal family fortune to purchase the sacred mountain property, establish protective boundaries, and inaugurate the first restoration phase, ensuring the shrine survived for future generations.
1967 – 2006

Vatican Papal Visits & Global Pilgrimage Shrine Status

During the 20th century, the House of the Virgin Mary received solemn apostolic visits from the Supreme Pontiffs of the Roman Catholic Church:
  • Pope Paul VI (July 26, 1967): The first reigning Pope to visit the shrine, presenting a commemorative golden lamp.
  • Pope John Paul II (November 30, 1979): Celebrated Mass and formally designated the sanctuary as an official Catholic Pilgrimage Destination.
  • Pope Benedict XVI (November 29, 2006): Celebrated open-air Mass at the sanctuary altar, delivering a universal message of global peace.
